Welcome to Country and Acknowlegement of Country
While both practices recognise and respect Aboriginal people as the Traditional Custodians of Country, there are important differences between a Welcome to Country and an Acknowledgement of Country.
A Welcome to Country is a formal cultural protocol that can only be delivered by a Traditional Owner, Elder or authorised Aboriginal representative of the Country on which the event is being held. It welcomes visitors onto Country and acknowledges the continuing connection of Aboriginal people to land, waters, culture and community. A Welcome to Country is often performed at significant events, conferences, ceremonies, official openings and community gatherings.
An Acknowledgement of Country can be delivered by anyone, Aboriginal or non-Aboriginal. It is a statement of respect that recognises the Traditional Custodians of the land and pays respect to Elders past and present. An Acknowledgement of Country is commonly given at meetings, presentations, workshops, school events and other gatherings where a formal Welcome to Country is not practical or required.
Why Are They Important?
Both practices demonstrate respect for Aboriginal peoples and cultures, acknowledge the ongoing relationship between Aboriginal people and Country, and contribute to meaningful reconciliation. They create an opportunity for all participants to recognise the history, cultural significance and continuing presence of Aboriginal communities.
